When websites were first becoming more design-oriented, designers swung a bit too far away from functionality in the effort to make a site visually appealing. In today’s online world, striking the balance between visual and functional is a delicate act. A site has to look good, but it also has to be responsive, follow accessibility standards, be easy to navigate, actually work, and still somehow stand out from your competition. This can be a challenge, especially if you don’t know what standards your company needs to follow.

A responsive website is one that will keep a crisp, legible, organized appearance no matter what type of device is being used, whether it is a desktop computer, tablet, or smartphone. If your website is not responsive it can translate to lost customers/clients who end up looking elsewhere to find a more “device friendly” website. In today’s web market a website needs to be responsive to display across the various devices that are used.

Social media is about the person, their likes, dislikes, and their life, and it allows for sharing those personal events and creating conversations. By comparison, Pinterest is impersonal because it’s not about the individual. It’s a resource to save and share ideas, much like an elaborate bookmarking system that other people can view.

You want the public face of your business to reflect the same quality that your services provide. You carefully check every brochure and advertisement produced for your business. Likewise, each blog, Facebook post, and link you share should be just as carefully planned and checked. Even scheduling months in advance, it’s impossible to maintain that kind of quality control for 10 social media posts a day.

While funny cat videos may not apply to your business, there are certainly services and values that are unique to your company’s vision. Maybe you can name them by heart because they’re in your tagline and splashed on every page of your website. Maybe you’re scratching your head and wondering what it is that sets you apart from the rest of your industry. Don’t worry; that something unique exists and perhaps all you need is someone to point it out. Those unique services and values you provide in every face-to-face interaction can also set you apart in the daily flood of information being thrown at your customers online.
